A mala is a prayer chain that consists of 54 or 108 vibrating pearls or seeds. Mantras or prayers, which are usually recited at least 108 times on the Mala, can be easily counted with the help of these prayer chains.
During Japa meditation (mantra recitation) you hold the Mala in your right hand and count the recited mantras with middle fingers and thumb. But the Mala is not just a practical counting aid, because with every mantra you also load your powerful Mala energetically. After a while it becomes a protective energy object. A mala should be worn as much as possible on the body, preferably around the neck and not touched by another person.
